Sherman was on of the may artists drawn to San Francisco during the early 1960's. As a student at the San Francisco Art Institute, he studied with such artists as Richard Diebenkorn, Elmer Bischoff, James Weeks and Nathan Olivera, and in 1961 he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. He then acquired a Master of Arts from San Francisco State University, where he remained for several years as an instructor in sculpture.

Beginning in 1969, Sherman left the city to paint exclusively. Northern California's Mendocino County became his home for the next eight years, with one year off for a world tour, most of which was spent painting in the Orient.

the years 1978-1981 Sherman spent living, painting, and exhibiting in London.
